Old Testament prophecies told God’s people about Jesus hundreds of years before His birth.

The Anointed One

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from the darkness for the prisoners … to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion – to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor. ” Isaiah 61: 1-4

The first time Jesus taught in the synagogue, He read these words from the book of Isaiah and announced that He was their fulfillment (Luke 4:21).  Jesus called himself, “Anointed by God”. The name Messiah means “Anointed One”. Indeed, the words used by Isaiah to describe the ministry of the coming Messiah – healing, freedom, comfort – were all evidence of God’s anointing on Jesus’s life.

Lord Jesus, we pray that the anointing of your Holy Spirit would fill our lives today. Through your joy, let us display your splendor. Amen.
