Sunrise: Advent is a wonderful season of hope!

“But you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.” Malachi 4:2

Malachi, the final Old Testament prophet, links the Old Testament to the New Testament through these words. Four hundred and thirty years separate the two testaments, with the Old Testament closing with the promise of the sun of righteousness coming with healing, and the New Testament opening with the announcement that the Messiah’s arrival is at hand.

The “sun of righteousness” is a penetrating image. As the light of the sun explodes on a new day, so Jesus, the Son of Righteousness, came into the world with power, announcing a new beginning for humanity.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your faithful presence throughout all history. As we welcome the morning sun, let us welcome your light into our lives each day. Amen.
